3rd Young Scientist Cancer Congress

YS2C Hackathon

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is an exciting and collaborative event where participants form teams to solve scientific or technical challenges in a limited amount of time. It's not about coding speed, but about creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving. At YS2C, our hackathon is focused on biological questions and data exploration — and it's open to everyone!

When and where?

The YS2C Hackathon will take place at Charité University (Mitte, Berlin) on October 8, 2025.

Who can participate?

Everyone is welcome — regardless of your background or experience with data science! We strongly encourage participation from:

The hackathon is designed to foster collaboration across disciplines. You don’t need to be a coder to join — curiosity and a research mindset are all you need!

How will the hackathon work?

The Hackathon Committee and supervisors will select between 10 and 15 motivated participants from various backgrounds.

We’ll kick off the day with a short presentation from clinicians and biologists, who will introduce a real-world clinical and biological question — and the associated datasets. We can’t reveal everything just yet, but get ready to dive into single-cell, spatial transcriptomics, and additional layers of data, including clinical and MRI information.

Once the challenge is presented, the team will brainstorm to identify the most promising strategies to analyze the data and address the research question. Hackathon supervisors — bioinformaticians and researchers — will be available throughout the day to support you technically and scientifically.

Then it’s time to dive into the analysis! Working closely with your teammates — biologists, clinicians, and bioinformaticians — you’ll collaborate, code, interpret, and iterate.

What do you need?

Bring your laptop, skills, curiosity, and good vibes! Your perspective matters, whether you're a data enthusiast, an experimentalist, or a clinician.

How can I participate?

If you're excited to be part of the YS2C Hackathon, fill out the registration form. No prior hackathon experience needed — just motivation and teamwork!

Milestone

All teams will briefly present their results during the YS2C closing ceremony. Outstanding contributions may even lead to a collaborative publication — this could be the start of something big!

After the hackathon, we invite you to join us for a well-deserved German beer 🍻 — the perfect setting to unwind, keep the conversation going, and explore future collaborations around science and innovation.
